Terrapin Masters

Encouraging Adults to Swim

Terrapin Masters Swim Club is a U.S. Masters Swim team hosted by University Recreation & Wellness at the University of Maryland. Our mission is to to help adult swimmers improve fitness and/or train for specific goals, and offer active support for a healthy lifestyle through friendship and camaraderie. Members of Masters are training for fitness, open water swimming, triathlons, swim meets and other events. Students, faculty/staff, alumni and members of the community may join.

Terrapin Masters is part of the Potomac Valley Local Masters Swimming Community (PVLMSC). This community helps to set the direction for Masters teams in the area, as well as celebrates all of the wonderful volunteers who make Masters Swimming so special. We encourage folks of all swimming backgrounds to become involved in Masters administration at the local and national levels.

There is a two-step process to register with Terrapin Masters:

1.   Register with U.S. Masters Swimming.*

2.   Purchase a Terrapin Masters Membership at the Member Services Desk in the Eppley Recreation Center.

*Swimmers are required to join U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) after swimming with Terrapin Masters for 30 days. Annual dues are $66 for the remainder of 2021 or $99 through 2022. USMS registration includes a subscription to USMS SWIMMER magazine, insurance coverage, members-only web features and discounts with USMS sponsor suppliers.

Membership Length UMD Student/ RecWell Member Community Member

If you are a current USMS Member and wish to drop in on a workout, bring your USMS card to the ERC Member Services desk and you can purchase a single-day pass for Terrapin Masters for $11.   If you need a current copy of your card, you can print one off at any time from the U.S. Masters Swimming site.

If you are thinking about joining our team and wish to attend a few practices to test the waters, we offer a free trial period. Contact Stephanie Draminksi at stephd@umd.edu and provide your name and intended first practice and she will arrange for you to receive a complimentary pass, good for 3 workouts. Your trial pass and wavier will be placed at the Member Services desk for you to collect before your first practice. The waiver can be returned to the staff at the Member Services desk or to the coach on deck. You will need to show a photo ID along with the pass to the staff at the Information desk in order to enter the facility for your 3 practices.

After three practices, you will need to purchase a Terrapin Masters membership from RecWell. Also, if you are not already a USMS Member, you have 30 days from your first swim to register with U.S. Masters Swimming. You may also wish to visit the USMS Registration site for full details and benefits of a USMS Membership.
