Adventure Orientation Programs

Terrapin Expeditions for New & Transfer Students (T.E.N.T.S.)

Jump start your college experience with a T.E.N.T.S. program!

Adventure orientation programs are a great way to meet other incoming Terps and build relationships before the semester even begins. Trained trip leaders will teach you outdoor skills and facilitate activities and dialogue focused on your transition to college. Each trip will focus on promoting personal growth, self-confidence, and relationship building through an adventure setting.

TOCSL T.E.N.T.S. Backpack the Appalachian Trail | July 7-10

Location: Harpers Ferry, WV

Cost: $100 (includes transportation, equipment rental, and meals)

Spend three days and two nights backpacking approximately a 23 mile section of the infamous Appalachian Trail (AT) while getting to know other new students. The AT is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, measuring roughly 2,190 miles in length. Trail highlights on this section of the trail include a breathtaking view of the Potomac River from the heights of Weverton Cliff, a stone monument in Gathland State Park, and a visit to historic Harpers Ferry - the “psychological halfway point” of the AT for thru-hikers. No experience is necessary; we’ll teach you the ins and outs of backpacking and backcountry camping!

If you are in need of financial assistance in order to participate in T.E.N.T.S., you can apply for funding from the Adventure Program Access and Enrichment Fund. The fund was created to cover full or partial adventure trip registrations for students who need financial assistance. Our hope is to provide more Terps with the opportunity to get outside and experience the wellness benefits of physical activity and spending time in nature.

When making your travel plans, please know that there is the possibility that a T.E.N.T.S. program may be cancelled. If the weather appears questionable for a program, the Adventure Program staff will be in contact with you via email to keep you updated, and we will do our best to alter the itinerary in order to run the program regardless of weather. However, if the Adventure Program cancels the trip due to weather, lack of participants, or other circumstances, all participants will receive a full refund and will be notified by email immediately.

If the participant cancels their registration 13 business days or more prior to the first day of the trip by completing the trip cancellation & refund request form, a refund will be given less a $10.00 processing fee. Cancellations made within 12 business days prior to the first day of the trip will result in no refund. If you or the Adventure Program are able to find another individual to take your place on the trip five business days or more in advance of the trip, a refund will be given less a $10.00 processing fee.

“I learned that most of the incoming students have the same fears or worries so we aren’t facing our worries alone. I also learned that I am physically capable of more than I thought I was.” - Jocelyn Martin
