Club Sports FAQs

Club Sports are student organizations, recognized by the Student Government Association (SGA).  The Club Sports staff of University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell), oversees and advises all club sports.

Clubs offer opportunities for developing friendships, building leadership skills, learning a new sport, improving existing sport skills, and practicing.  Many clubs compete at various levels against other universities, both on a regional and national level.

The Intramural Sports program provides the structure for competitive and noncompetitive sport play. Intramural Sport teams play on campus and only play against other UMD students. Members of a club sport may compete against other university and college teams. Clubs are responsible for scheduling their own practices, recruiting members, requesting funding, arranging travel and maintaining club equipment. Most clubs practice 2-4 times a week, in addition to any scheduled competitions or tournaments.

Intercollegiate Athletic programs are sanctioned by the NCAA and supported by the Maryland Intercollegiate Athletic Department. Club sports are student organizations supported by University Recreation & Wellness.

Information can be found on the club’s website or social media account, by emailing the club contact and by inquiring in person at the Club Sports Office. The office is located on Level 0 of the Eppley Recreation Center, Room 0121.

  • Current members of the Maryland Alumni Association (no more than 10% of the Club roster may be Alumni)
  • University Affiliates and Shady Grove students are not eligible to join a club sport team.

If you are interested in joining a club sport, the first step is to email the appropriate club contact for additional information. You might consider asking them about club culture, team organization, and social opportunities, as well as details like practice times, locations, and fees.  In addition, most clubs have websites and/or social media sites which are accessible through the club directory.

Participants are able to join a team online at any point this semester starting the first day of classes. For information on practices times and locations contact the Club Sports Office at 301-226-5500 or clubsports@umd.edu.

Minors (under 18 years old) must register for a club team in the Club Sports Office in Eppley Recreation Center.

Anyone can join a sport club regardless of their ability. However, due to financial limitations, clubs may limit the number of members that travel to compete. Tryouts or evaluations may be necessary to select traveling teams. In addition, A, B and C squads may be formed based on the size of the club to allow for different levels of competition and participation.

Clubs set their own fees. The cost of being a part of a club sport greatly varies depending on which club you are interested in joining. But because clubs are financially supported by University Recreation & Wellness and/or the Student Government Association, fees are limited and range from $0-$1000 per year. These fees help fund gear, travel and other activities. Clubs try to limit out-of-pocket expenses by participating in various fundraisers.  For more information on the specifics of what it costs to participate in a certain club, contact the club directly.

Most clubs practice between 2-4 days a week depending upon facility availability and demand. The timing of club practices varies depending upon sport and facility as well. Some teams practice very early in the morning (e.g. Crew) while others more typically practices in the evenings. The best way to determine the schedule of a team is to contact the club directly.

If you wish to no longer participate on a Club Sport team, click here to request to be removed from the club roster on IMLeagues. Please keep in mind, removal from the club roster will mean you are ineligible to participate in club practices or events for the remainder of the academic year.

Don’t see your sport listed in the club directory? First, check to see if your sport is a student organization at the University of Maryland, College Park, through the student organizations listings: TerpLink.

If there is not another student organization for your sport and you’re interested in forming a new club, first register the new club as a student organization with the Student Organization Resource Center (SORC). Once the club is a recognized student organization with SORC, contact the club sports director to apply for RecWell recognition. All RecWell recognized club sports must be registered student organizations with Student Office Recourse Center (SORC). Currently RecWell is not accepting any additional Club teams.

For more information on creating a student organization visit the SORC website or contact them at sorc@umd.edu.
