Be Active Whenever & Wherever Works for You!

There are plenty of ways to be an Active Terp that don’t involve participating in structured activities. Explore what RecWell, the University of Maryland, and the surrounding community have to offer to help you be active on your own schedule.

From taking a jog around Lake Artemesia to playing a game of pickup Ultimate Frisbee on LaPlata Beach, there are endless ways to play and have fun in and around College Park. Next time you feel like moving, challenge yourself to try something new! Whether it’s squash, volleyball or, golf- it can’t hurt to try- and you just may find your new favorite activity.

Move More and Move Often

You don’t need to spend an hour in the gym to experience the many wellness benefits of being active. Any amount of movement is going to help you feel better and have more energy. The CDC recommends 150 minutes of activity for adults each week. This sounds like a lot, but this can be broken up into smaller chunks of time - as long as you’re doing activity for at least 10 minutes at a time. The key is to just move as much as possible each day.

Below are just some of the ways you can be active whenever and wherever makes sense for you - with friends, or by yourself.

LaPlata Beach

LaPlata Beach is home to two beach volleyball courts and a large turf field. Terps can use this space any time of day for all kinds of recreation. Games of pickup soccer, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee are common … if you want to play, just ask!

Lake Artemesia

Located just a mile away from Fraternity Row, Lake Artemesia can give Terps a break from the bustle of campus and provide great scenery for an afternoon walk or run.

Engineering Fields

Located near Route 1 by the famous ‘M’ circle are the Engineering Fields. These beautiful fields are available for Terps year-round. In addition to the grass fields, there’s also a competition grade softball field. So go play to your heart’s desire!

Biking Trails

There is an extensive network of over 12 miles of bike trails in College Park and the surrounding area. Want to go on a scenic bike ride? Just pick a trail and start pedaling. If you don’t have a bike on campus, don’t worry. You can visit the RecWell Bike Shop to rent a bike for the semester, or your nearest mBike station if you’re just riding for a day.

If you’re looking to have some fun with friends or by yourself, Eppley is a good place to start. From weight-lifting to basketball, cycling to badminton and seemingly everything in between, the ERC is the place to be.
