Functional Training

Physical training without limits

Functional training= training your body for the way it lives, with the goal of helping you live better. Train for real life, without limits, in all degrees of freedom using independent fitness tools, body weight, and gravity. Functional fitness training focuses on body weight, agility, and balance to build a body capable of handling everyday activities in all planes of motion, with endless exercise creativity. 

Where can I find functional training spaces?

Some functional fitness training can be accommodated in RecWell weight rooms, but dedicated spaces are located in both the Eppley Recreation Center (ERC) and Ritchie Coliseum.  Find the Functional Training Studio (FTS) on Level 0 of the ERC and the Functional Training Zone (FTZ) on level B of Ritchie Coliseum.

Small group workouts are FREE to currently enrolled UMD students and RecWell members. 

How can I take small group workouts? Toggle Accordion

Stop by the RecWell Member Services desk in the ERC to sign the group fitness Informed Consent and get a sticker for your UID card. Show your UID card (with sticker) at the door for entry. Save time at Member Services - print, read, and sign the form below and bring it with you for faster checkout.

Who teaches RecWell small group workouts? Toggle Accordion

Recwell fitness program staff are nationally certified group fitness instructors and personal trainers. Many staff contain speciality certifications in BodyPump ™, Health Coaching, Kettlebell, Powerlifting and more.

What types of workouts are offered? Toggle Accordion

RecWell Fitness offers a wide variety of land and cycling classes. Small group workouts include: Core Conditioning, Kettlebell, TRX and Functional Training Bootcamp. A minimum of 3 participants is required to hold class. Instructor class assignments can be found on our pdf schedule but are subject to change.

When should I arrive to the workout? Toggle Accordion

Workouts are offered on a drop-in basis, no pre-registration necessary. Attendance is limited by studio space and equipment so arrive at least 15-minutes early. Participants are let into class on a first-come, first served basis.  For participant safety, no one will be admitted 10 minutes after the start of class (the end of the warm-up).

Workout attire (breathable clothing that allows movement) and athletic shoes are required.

What should I bring to the workout? Toggle Accordion

A water bottle and a smile. Due to space constraints, we do not allow bags/jackets into our studios (except Regents). Please secure these in a personal locker. Locks can be checked out for free at the ERC Equipment Issue desk or the front desk at Ritchie Coliseum.
