Registration is not required, but prior to participating in RecWell Group Fitness classes, you must stop by RecWell Member Services in the ERC to sign the Informed Consent form and get a sticker for your UID card. This must be done each year. Show your UID (with sticker) at the door for any class.
All group fitness classes are drop-in with no sign up required; however, class limits and equipment inventory are strictly enforced, so we recommend you arrive early (10-15 minutes). Participants are let into class on a first-come, first served basis as space and equipment allow.
For participant safety, no one will be admitted 10 minutes after the start of any class.
Yes, a minimum of 3 participants are needed to hold a group fitness class. If minimum participation is not reached, the class will be canceled.
Yes, fitness assessment testing is only offered to RecWell members and UMD students. However, non-members may purchase a Bod Pod® body composition assessment. (link to Bod Pod/ Fitness Assessment page).
The bod pod test is accurate to within 1% of hydrostatic weighing (the gold standard for body composition testing). The test uses the same volume displacement ideals but with air instead of water. The entire test takes 30-45 minutes.
Cardio + Weight Training
10 laps = 1 mile
Only certain types of Olympic lifts are permitted (squats and deadlifts). All other explosive/ overhead movements are NOT permitted due to space constraints and safety concerns.
No chalk or liquid grip may be used in RecWell weight/fitness facilities.
Cardiovascular equipment is programmed for a 25-minute workout and 5-minute cool down (30-minutes) to allow others who are waiting an opportunity to work out. If no one is waiting, you are welcome to restart the machine and extend your workout.
Athletic-type shoes with closed toes are recommended for all weight and fitness spaces. Barefoot training is not permitted in weight rooms or on any cardiovascular machine.
Yes, all weight/fitness staff have been trained to properly spot. Staff members are not permitted to correct form while lifting.
