“I feel I have more energy and I have lost six pounds too. My trainer pushes me harder than I would myself. He is knowledgeable about all aspects of my fitness and is easy to work with. " Francis Hawkins, Communications Systems Analyst, Division of Information Technology

Did you know that Barre was created by a Jewish ballerina named Lotte Berk after injuring her back? Originally from Germany, Lotte was forced to flee her home in 1930 when Nazism and Anti-Semitism was on the rise. Despite the trials she faced making a new life in a new country and battling her injury, Berk created the popular Barre workout system that is practiced widely across the United States and Europe today. Specifically, Berk created Barre by mixing her ballet barre routines and her rehabilitative exercise therapy regimen. Barre utilizes resistance bands, hand weights, yoga straps and exercise balls and focuses on small, pulsing movements with light resistance to help participants develop strength, balance and stability. UMD Fitness is proud to offer Barre to our Active Terps community. If you are interested in trying out Barre, check out our class schedule in our bio, which has resumed fully. The last video clip is an example of some moves from the leg segment of a Barre class, courtesy of our instructor Natalie L.  Thanks for tuning in to our Spring Origins series. We hope you learned something new and are excited to try one of our classes this semester and beyond!
Did you know that Zumba originated in Colombia, South America? Zumba incorporates multiple dance styles including Cumbia, Salsa, and Merengue. The Salsa originated in Cuba with influences from Spain and Africa, and Merengue originated in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, with some influences from Venezuela as well! Merengue used to be a folk dance that eventually evolved into a ballroom style dance. Zumba classes pair various types of Latin American music and dance moves, as well as music from other cultures, to create a fun, energizing cardiovascular workout! UMD Fitness is proud to offer Zumba to our Active Terps community. If you are interested in trying out Zumba, check out our in-person class schedule in our bio, which will resume on April 5th. The last video clip is an example of some moves you would see in a Zumba class, courtesy of our instructor Izzy M!  Tune in next week to hear more about the origins of some of our other group fitness classes.

Did you know that Les Mills BodyCombat is inspired by 7 different fighting styles? These fighting styles include Karate, Taekwondo, Muy Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing, Capoeira and Kung Fu. Karate originated in Japan in the late 16th century, and has a strong focus on power strikes and sharp movements (called kata). Taekwondo originated in Korea, and is one of the oldest forms of martial arts that dates back roughly 2,000 years. Taekwondo has a heavier emphasis on kicking compared to other fighting styles. Muy Thai, the national sport of Thailand, was developed hundreds of years ago as a form of close combat. It is referred to as “the art of 8 limbs,” which focuses on using the entire body as a weapon (including the elbows and knees that are so heavily used in track 7). Boxing originated in Egypt but was made popular in ancient Greece, and involves fighting with the fists (seen in your heavy punching tracks - often track 3). Generally fighters wear padded gloves and fight in 3 minute rounds. Kickboxing originated in Japan and is a Japanese hybrid martial art that combines elements of punching and kicking and focuses on using trained energy, agility, and reflexes to dominate your opponent. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art which has 3 parts: dance, game, fight. It was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil in the 16th century, with the goal being to outmaneuver your opponent (this style focuses more on offense than other fighting styles). Finally Kung Fu, which literally means “achievement through great effort”, originated in China and utilizes kicks, blocks, and open and closed hand strikes for self defense. UMD Fitness is proud to offer Les Mills BodyCombat to our Active Terps community. If you are interested in trying out Les Mills BodyCombat, check out our class schedule in our bio. The last video clip is an example of some moves you would see in a BodyCombat class, featuring instructor Asia W. Tune in next week to hear more about the origins of some of our other group fitness classes!
