Learn to Swim

Swimming is for all ages and abilities

Swimming is a life skill that can be learned or refined at any age. At RecWell, we want every individual to be able to enjoy swimming. Our classes and lessons are available for folks ages 6 months to adult. You will learn in a safe and fun environment, and we hope you will become a lifelong swimmer. 

In addition to becoming a better swimmer through swim lessons, students also learn how to be safe in, on and around bodies of water. Some of the benefits of swimming include; improved cardiovascular health, improved mood, relief of joint pain, and decreased risk of drowning. No matter your reason for taking swim lessons, we want to help you achieve your goals.

Classes and lessons are held in the ERC Natatorium (unless otherwise noted), and all equipment is provided for participants.

Group swim classes are great for learning how to swim in a structured, cost effective manner. We set the times and the curriculum, and you join your classmates in working towards set goals. At RecWell, we teach using the American Red Cross Curriculum, and all of our instructors are state and federally background screened. 1 session of classes* costs $60 for UMD students & RecWell Members and $75 for Community Members. There are generally two sessions of classes during the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Some classes fill quickly, so it is recommended that you register early to ensure a spot. 

Registration dates:  Summer group classes - closed Summer private/ semi-private lessons - closed Fall group classes - 15 August Fall private/ semi-private lessons - 1 September   *There are NO make-ups or refunds for missed group classes.    Class schedules are outlined below for your convenience. 

Private and Semi-Private lessons are available for folks who want to learn in a more intimate, slow spaced, and specific environment. You work directly with your assigned instructor to schedule the lessons and develop goals. Private lessons are one-on-one, while semi-private lessons are two or three on one. For semi-private lessons, you are required to provide your own co-participant(s).  Each person enrolling in private and semi-private lessons must pay for the lessons. Semi-private lessons may not begin until each co-participant has completed payment. For private or semi-private lessons, please complete the lesson preference form, so we can pair you with an instructor. Once you are paired with an instructor, you can schedule the lessons, and complete payment.

  1. Log In, or Create an Account (new users only)
  2. Select Program Registration.
  3. Select Learn To Swim.
  4. Find the appropriate class, and select View Programs.
  5. Add the class to your cart. Please make sure the correct person is being enrolled in the class. 
  6. Select Continue Shopping or Continue to Cart.
  7. Ensure the correct person is enrolled in the correct class/ lesson. Input payment information. Select Submit Payment.
  8. Print and sign the waiver and bring it with you to class. We will also have copies on site for your convenience.

To Register

  1. Complete the lesson preference form.
  2. Await Instructor assignment email (please allow at least 5 business days). Work with your assigned instructor to create a schedule, and discuss lesson goals.
  3. Purchase your desired lesson package (1, 6, or 12 lessons).

Swimming Terps 10 & Under

Meets twice weekly for a semester long session of swimming instruction for youth aged 6 to 10. Swimmers will work on stroke development, endurance and having fun in the water.

Fall 2018 - September 11 - December 4, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:15p - 6:15p (off Nov 22& 29)

Spring 2019 - January 8 - May 7, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:15p - 6:15p (off Mar 21, Apr 16 & 18)

Cost - $300 (members)/ $360 (non-members)

Refunds Toggle Accordion
Please use the below form to request a refund for group classes, and private or semi-private lessons. All refunds are evaluated on a case by case basis, but general policies are listed below.    Refund requests originated by the participant are subject to a minimum $10.00 processing fee (4 or fewer business days in advance of the class start date) Refund requests submitted after the first class has met are subject to a 50% reduction  Refund requests submitted after the class has met two or more times are not eligible for a refund In the event of a documented medical condition, you may be eligible for a pro-rated refund    *All requests referencing medical issues must have accompanying documentation.
