Clinics, Classes, & Rides

Learn skills to adventure on your own

The Adventure Program hosts a number of clinics, classes, and rides each semester to help Terps  learn technical skills and build confidence for adventuring in the outdoors.

Learn how to cook over a campfire, belay at the climbing wall, take care of your bike, roll a kayak, and more. Expand your opportunities for being active in the outdoors and enhance your intellectual wellness by taking the initiative to learn new skills.

Clinics are open to all UMD students, faculty, and staff. Pre-registration with UID is required. Classes for academic credit are open to current UMD undergraduate students.

Clinic Offerings

Climb Safe Clinic Toggle Accordion

Interested in learning how to belay at the Climbing Wall?  This 2-hour program teaches the knots, equipment, and belay technique necessary to pass a belay test with the program.  After completing the clinic, come to the wall during open hours to demonstrate the skills required for belay certification in order to receive certification. Once certified, you’ll be able to belay participants at the Climbing Wall.

Kayak Roll Clinic Toggle Accordion
This two-session clinic will teach you the basics of kayak rolling. We will start with a general introduction to the sport of whitewater kayaking and will go over some basic paddling strokes. Most of our time will be spent learning how to roll a kayak. No experience is necessary.  Bring your swimsuit and a towel. Commitment to attend both sessions is required. Participants will receive a complimentary noseplug (essential gear for kayak rolling!).

Intro to Bike Maintenance Toggle Accordion
This four-session class provides an introduction to the basics of bicycle maintenance and repair. Topics covered include flat tire repair, brake adjustment, brake pad replacement, drive-train maintenance and repair, and an introduction to hubs, bottom brackets, and headsets. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive a bike multi-tool and a set of tire levers.

Campfire Building Clinic Toggle Accordion
There are few things more rewarding than gathering around a campfire after a long day of adventuring outside. Yet, campfires can often be difficult to start and potentially dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.  Come learn the art and science of building campfires from Adventure Program Trip Leaders and celebrate your new found knowledge with s'mores.

Paddle in the Pool Toggle Accordion
Come practice your roll or other paddling skills in our open Paddle in the Pool sessions. Experienced Trip Leaders will be on hand to give you some pointers (only if you want!). Instruction is not guaranteed; if you want guaranteed instruction, check our Kayak Roll Clinic.  Bring your own gear or borrow some of ours. If you bring your own boat, you must ensure it has been cleaned.

Biking in Cold Weather Toggle Accordion
If you’re interested in biking, but aren’t sure how to manage biking in the winter, join us in the Biking in Cold Weather clinic! Winter cycling has special considerations for dress, safety, and managing cold. Over this two-hour clinic, we will walk you through how to prepare yourself for an enjoyable experience. Participants will receive a gift certificate for a one day bike rental.

Cold Weather Backpacking Clinic Toggle Accordion
Have you ever wanted to try cold weather backpacking, but didn’t know how to prepare? This clinic is for you! This two hour clinic will help prepare you to take the journey into cold weather backpacking by discussing the unique benefits and concerns of winter backpacking, how to pack and layer, and some special considerations for sustained cold-weather activity. Participants in this clinic will receive a certificate for a weekend backpack rental for a backcountry trip of their own in the future!

BikeYo at Lake Artemesia Toggle Accordion

Get centered and move your legs on a fusion bike ride to Lake Artemesia with RecWell! In this 3-hour program, we will take a relaxing bike ride from the RecWell Bike Shop to Lake Artemesia where we'll practice yoga guided by a RecWell yoga instructor. No previous experience is required and bike/helmet rentals are included.
 
 
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens Bike Ride Toggle Accordion

Get out and explore the Anacostia Tributary bike paths with the RecWell Bike Shop! This all-skill levels ride will leave from campus and ride 8.5 miles along the Anacostia River Trail to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, where we will take in the sites and enjoya snack before returning to campus. The total ride distance is 17 miles and bicycle rentals are included.
 
 
 

Wilderness First Responder

Dates: May 30-June 5
Location: Eppley Recreation Center

The Wilderness First Responder program is the ideal medical training for leaders in remote areas including outdoor educators, guides, military, professional search and rescue teams, researchers, and those involved in disaster relief. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical. It includes the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments for days and weeks if necessary.
