Cancellations made within seven business days prior to the first day of the trip will result in no refund. If you or the Adventure Program are able to find another individual to take your place on the trip two business days or more in advance of the trip, a refund will be given less a $10.00 processing fee.

For extended trips of three days length or longer, if the participant cancels their registration 13 business days or more prior to the first day of the trip a refund will be given, less a $10.00 processing fee.  Cancellations made within 12 business days prior to the first day of the trip will result in no refund.  If you or the Adventure Program are able to find another individual to take your place on the trip five business days or more in advance of the trip, a refund will be given less a $10.00 processing fee.

Challenge Course

What do I bring the the day of a challenge course program? Toggle Accordion
  • Closed toe athletic shoes are required.
  • Water bottle (even an empty soda bottle) and a snack for during your breaks
  • Rain gear is critical.  All programs continue outdoors, rain or shine.  Keep your body and clothes dry in the event of rain.  Gore-Tex is great but ponchos/vinyl rain coats can suffice in a pinch.  Water resistant or waterproof jacket (with a hood) plus pants is recommended even on hot weather days – you will be surprised at how chilling rain is.
  • Layers of clothing for versatility (layers can always be removed easily).  Dress extra warm in non-cotton clothes (polyester/fleece is best).

DON’T wear or bring:

  • Platform, heeled or slippery shoes

  • Sandals, flip-flops or open-toe shoes

  • Jewelry, large belt buckles or long earrings

  • Dress clothing or clothes that cannot get dirty or sweaty

  • Please do not bring any pets to the course.

What behaviors are expected during the program? Toggle Accordion
  • Adhere to regulations.
  • Don’t proceed in any activity until instructed.
  • Follow all rules/instructions from staff.
  • Avoid stepping on props or equipment.
  • Don’t use chewing tobacco, cigarettes, alcohol or other drugs during the program.
Who can attend? Toggle Accordion

In addition to groups from the UMD campus, public and private groups from the community are welcome. Each group needs a minimum of 10 participants in order to reserve a program and a maximum of 50/half-day or full-day. Recreational climbing can accommodate 50 participants/2 hours. However splitting up, or scheduling multiple days, can accommodate larger groups.

What are some of the risks? Toggle Accordion

Taking risks in a supportive and safe atmosphere is vital to experiential education. Safety is the number one priority while participating in challenging activities. Ultimately you will decide upon your own level of risk taking utilizing the challenge by choice philosophy. Risks taken may be physical, emotional, social, or a combination. By taking risks, we learn more about ourselves and our interactions with others. Challenge Course programs strive to provide a safe environment in which to explore these challenges, however participation is ultimately at your own risk and your safety cannot be guaranteed.

What about using just the climbing wall? Toggle Accordion

In addition to our challenge course, groups can reserve our 55-foot climbing wall for recreational climbing. Recreational climbing wall rentals include basic equipment for participants as well as a staff led orientation to climbing. Our staff will also provide the necessary belaying and safety checks for climbers.

When can a group go to the challenge course? Toggle Accordion

We operate day or night (with our huge stadium lights!) 7 days a week. There are a limited number of available reservations.  The first step is to fill out a program request form.  Once we have responded, answered any questions, and confirmed a time for your workshop, you will need to send payment and return a signed agreement to reserve your program date. Reservations are first come, first served based on when we receive both of these items and may be made up to 1 year in advance.

How large a group can you accommodate? Toggle Accordion

We can usually accommodate a group of up to 50 people and have a minimum group size of 10 people.  We do work with larger groups from time to time so please check in with the program director, Mike Phaneuf, at mphaneuf@umd.edu if you have questions about accommodating larger groups.  For groups over 16 people, we will most likely have to split the group into smaller groups due to the nature of our activities.

What if it rains? Toggle Accordion

In the case of light rain, we can still offer outdoor programming depending on the comfort level of the group.  In the case of heavy rain or severe weather, for groups up to 50 people, we have indoor space available and can still offer a team building workshop focusing on group goals and dynamics, similar to the low team elements outside.  We do not have indoor climbing facilities.  For larger groups, we may be able to secure indoor space for use during the program, but this is not guaranteed.  Please check in with the program director, Michael Phaneuf at mphaneuf@umd.edu or 301-226-4456 about weather related concerns and possible rescheduling.

What is adventure education? Toggle Accordion

Adventure education is the purposeful use of activities in which there are real and perceived risks and where the outcome is influenced by the participants.  The Challenge Course is founded upon the idea of learning by doing, and its purpose is to give people opportunities to develop awareness and skills that lead to personal and group achievement.

What are the physical demands of the Challenge Course? Toggle Accordion

Some workshops may take place in an outdoor setting, which can present some inherent dangers.  Adventure activities can be physically demanding and may include running, jumping, being lifted, and lifting or spotting others.  The workshops can be mentally, socially, and emotionally challenging as well.  The workshop curriculums vary but may contain components from a combination of some or all of the following experiential education areas:  Ice-Breakers, Energizers, and Team Building and Problem Solving initiatives.

How do I find the Challenge Course on University of Maryland College Park campus? Toggle Accordion

It is conveniently located outside the Adventure Program, by the NW corner of the Eppley Recreation Center (ERC); Metered parking exists in front of the ERC or the Terrapin Trail Garage when available.

Do I have choices while at the Challenge Course? Toggle Accordion

The Challenge Course’s educational philosophy is “Challenge by Choice,” which means that we believe maximum benefit and learning occur when the level of participation by a group participant is freely chosen.  Your facilitators will make every reasonable effort to teach the associated skills and safety procedures which help to create a supportive environment in which accepting challenges is encouraged.  Your responsibility is to make appropriate choices regarding your participation in the activities, based on your understanding of the benefits to be gained, risks involved, and your personal health.

I have a group from another Maryland school. Does my group receive the student rate? Toggle Accordion

University Recreation & Wellness is supported in part by student fees from students at the University of Maryland, College Park campus.  As such, these groups receive a partially subsidized rate, and we are unable to pass this rate on to other groups.

What paperwork (as a participant) do I need to do prior to program? Toggle Accordion

Read and sign the Release and Informed Consent Agreement.  Participants under the age of 18 will need to fill out the Minor Release and Informed Consent Agreement and will need a parental or guardian signature on this form.

What paperwork and insurance requirements (as a group leader) do I need prior to the program? Toggle Accordion
  1. Review, sign and return the program agreement to confirm details of the event.
  2. Fill out the pre-workshop questionnaire
  3. If your group is not from the University of Maryland, you must furnish an appropriate and current certificate of insurance showing that there is in effect, commercial or comprehensive general liability insurance, including public liability and property damage.

Your group agrees to provide approved proof of liability insurance in the amount of at least two million dollars ($2,000,000 per occurrence) combined single limit. Proof of insurance must also name as additional insured: University of Maryland, its officers, agents, and employees. This insurance coverage must be primary and noncontributory.

You may copy and paste the paragraphs above when requesting a certificate from your insurer.

Insurance for private groups may be available as a rider on your homeowner's or renter's insurance.

What do I need to know about parking on campus? Toggle Accordion

Metered parking lots are available in front of the Eppley Recreation Center on Farm Drive.

How do I make a payment? Toggle Accordion

Payment for campus groups and non-campus groups should be in one lump sum sent in or collected from the group leader, rather than collected per individual.

Campus groups can provide a University KFS # on the agreement form.  When the workshop is complete, we can process this account to cover payment.  In addition, a campus group can make payment with a check made out to the University of Maryland or a major credit card.  Cash can also be used, but please use the exact amount.

Non-campus affiliated groups can make payment with a check made out to the University of Maryland or a major credit card.  These groups require a 50% deposit to be made with the return of their signed program agreement.

Climbing Wall

Who can use the Climbing Wall? Toggle Accordion

Current students and RecWell members. Members can also sponsor non-members with our guest pass policy.

Can the wall be reserved? Toggle Accordion

In addition to our challenge course, groups can reserve our 55-foot climbing wall for recreational climbing. Recreational climbing wall rentals include basic equipment for participants as well as a staff led orientation to climbing. Our staff will also provide the necessary belaying and safety checks for climbers.

How large a group can you accommodate? Toggle Accordion

We can usually accommodate a group of up to 50 people and have a minimum group size of 10 people. What if it rains? Toggle Accordion

In the case of light rain, we can still offer programming at the wall. In case of closure, please check our climbing wall page or the Adventure Program facebook page for notices.

How do I find the Climbing Wall on University of Maryland College Park campus? Toggle Accordion

It is conveniently located outside the Adventure Program, by the NW corner of the Eppley Recreation Center (ERC); Metered parking exists in front of the ERC or the Terrapin Trail Garage.

What paperwork (as a participant) do I need to do prior to program? Toggle Accordion

How much does it cost to participate and what’s included? Toggle Accordion

Use of the Climbing Wall and Grotto is included in student fees and membership fees. Use of harnesses, climbing shoes, and helmets is included at no additional cost.
