About Maryland Sport Clubs

A Sport Club is a student organization, recognized by University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) and formed by individuals motivated by a common interest and desire to participate in a favorite sport activity. Clubs vary in focus and programming, since student members manage the operation of the club and decide on club activities.

Clubs offer opportunities for learning a new sport, improving existing sport skills, practicing and playing for fun, and/or competing at various levels. Club officers develop valuable leadership skills, through successful management of administrative affairs and intra-club dynamics.

Maryland Sport Clubs, a department within University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell), oversees and advises all Club Sports.  Clubs must operate within the Maryland Sport Clubs framework of policies and procedures which are in place to promote safety and manage risk.

IMPORTANT: If you are trying to join a club or access a club’s information from off campus, you will be required to connect to the VPN. See the guide to access the Sport Clubs site off campus for additional information on the VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection.

Joining a Sport Club

Learn More
If you are interested in joining a Sport Club, please email the appropriate club contact for additional information such as on practice times, locations and fees.  In addition, most clubs have websites and/or social media sites which are accessible through the Directory page.

When to Join

Participants are highly encouraged to join a Sport Club team during the open enrollment period at the start of each semester.  During the open enrollment period, perspective members are encouraged to just show up to a club’s practice space/time or attend an informational meeting.

The open enrollment period for each semester is:

  • FALL: September 1 - October 1, 2016
  • SPRING: January 30 – March 1, 2017

Prospective members may join at another time throughout the year, but must do so by coming to the Sport Clubs Office located on Level 0 of the Eppley Recreation Center, Room 0121.  There, you will complete a Release & Informed Consent Form, Sport Clubs Code of Conduct and join the club on-line.  After completing all the requirements, the student will be given an Add Slip to be presented to a club officer at practice. New members who join outside the open enrollment period will not be able to travel with the club for 3 weeks.  New members should not just show-up to a club practice to join the club outside the open enrollment period.  They MUST come to the Sport Clubs Office first!

How to Join
Prospective members must complete the following steps to join a club:

  • Join the club online
  • Complete an Online* Release & Informed Consent/Sport Clubs Code of Conduct Form

All members are required to join the club online through the following steps: Go to the club directory page,  click on the name of the club, click the blue “Join” button, and complete the required information or load a previous profile.

IMPORTANT: If you are trying to join a club or access a club’s information from off campus, you will be required to connect to the VPN. See the guide to access the Sport Clubs site off campus for additional information on the VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection.

*Members under the age of 18 must complete a paper Release & Informed Consent/Sport Clubs Code of Conduct Form.  Paper forms can be turned into a Sport Club Officer or the Sport Clubs Office on level 0 of the Eppley Recreation Center.

All members are required to complete a Release & Informed Consent/Sport Clubs Code of Conduct Form prior to participating.  Your name will not appear on the club roster until you have joined the club online and have turned in a completed  Release and Informed Consent/Sport Clubs Code of Conduct Form.

Who Can Join

All officially enrolled students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty and staff of the University of Maryland, College Park, and in some cases, members of the University of Maryland Alumni Association are eligible to join a sport club as a regular member.  Competitive eligibility is based on each sport's governing body regulations.

Students, faculty and staff of other University of Maryland campuses and institutions, such as University of Maryland, Shady Grove, UMUC or the University of Maryland, Baltimore, are ineligible to participate in sport club programming at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Sport Clubs do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, personal appearance, age, national origin, political affiliation and physical or mental disability.

Forming a New Club

Don’t see your sport listed?  First, check to see if your sport is a student organization at the University of Maryland, College Park, but not a recognized Sport Club through University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell).  A listing of all student organizations can be found through OrgSync.

To form a new club or apply for RecWell recognition please reference procedures within the Sport Clubs Handbook.
