Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities

University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) is committed to making its facilities, programs and services inclusive and accessible to all members of the Maryland community.  Information is provided below specifically for people with disabilities who wish to engage in recreational activities on campus.

Facilities

Except the Reckord Armory Gym, University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) facilities meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance requirements and standards. These facilities feature handicap parking, accessible entrances, elevators, room signs with braille, and ADA-compliant bathrooms and shower facilities. Guide/aid animals are permitted in all RecWell facilities.

Specifically, the Eppley Recreation Center features wheelchair accessible spots at outdoor tables, family changing rooms to accommodate those with caretakers for additional privacy, and accessible spectator seating in the natatorium on both the lower and upper levels.  All activity spaces are wheelchair accessible via elevators and/or card access doors. The indoor and outdoor aquatic centers are also equipped with pool lifts and wheelchair access to the instructional pool.

Access to other RecWell facilities

Reckord Armory -- This building does not have an elevator.  The only wheelchair access to the gymnasium and Intramural Sports office is through the rear doors facing the Main Administration Building. To gain access to the gymnasium/IM office during recreational hours, call 301-226-4444.

Ritchie Coliseum – The front entrance is available, as well as a handicap ramp on the north side of the facility for convenient entry to Coliseum events.

Outdoor spaces, including the Climbing Center, Cole Tennis Courts, Engineering Fields, Fraternity Row Fields,  LaPlata Beach, Turf Fields, Leonardtown Park and Washington Quad are accessible via sidewalks and gradual slopes.

The Challenge Course features a universally accessible Alpine Tower which offers all participants the opportunity to participate in climbing and non-climbing team challenges.  Our challenge course programs follow a universal design, so that it is not evident that modifications have been made for a specific participant or group of participants.

Programs

RecWell strives to design programs to allow for participation by all members of the university community.  Students, faculty and staff with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to participate in all RecWell programs and activities, though some reasonable accommodations may be required.

If accommodations are needed, please contact us in advance, so that we may provide you with a quality recreational experience.
