Student Employment

Applicants must be currently enrolled University of Maryland students who are service-oriented, reliable, and willing to enforce RecWell rules and regulations. Student Positions

Adventure Program Rental Desk Staff

Provide service to walk-up and telephone customers at the Outdoor Recreation Center. Tasks include: renting equipment, cleaning and repairing equipment, assisting Resource Center users, and answering questions.

Adventure Program Trip Leader

Plan, organize, and lead various outdoor adventure trips, varying from day hikes to extended expeditions. Some trip experience preferred.

Aquatic Instructors

Prepare course outlines and lesson plans, ensure safety of participants, complete course records, and instruct all classes according to University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) and certification agency standards. WSI certification is required.

Challenge Course Instructor

Support general high ropes functions, instruct and monitor challenge course and ropes activities.

Climbing Wall Staff

Support general climbing wall functions, instruct and monitor climbing wall and bouldering grotto activities.

Facility Staff

Provide service to facility users to ensure a safe/enjoyable experience, enforce admissions policies and facility rules, issue equipment, and answer phones and questions.

Golf Course Pro Shop

Assist with all RecWell Golf responsibilities at the pro shop.

Group Fitness Instructor

Teach basic and advanced group exercise classes. Examples include step aerobics, group cycling, cardio-boxing, and water aerobics. Teaching experience preferred.

Intramural Sport Official

Officiate intramural basketball, flag football, soccer, and/or volleyball games. No experience necessary and students are able to officiate and play during the same season. Students who are interested in officiating should see the Intramural Sports page in this booklet for more information on training and hiring, or contact the Intramural Sports Office at 301-226-4444.


Provide a safe and pleasant aquatic atmosphere by safeguarding pool and sauna users, enforcing facility rules, and acting as a resource and service person when needed. Lifeguards must maintain a reasonable degree of physical conditioning, demonstrated by passing a timed swim test.
CPR/PR and Lifeguard certifications are required.

Member Service Representative

Provide service to visitors and customers; sales, marketing, assist with program registration, assist professional staff with administrative duties.

Operations Assistant

Provide support service to all University Recreation & Wellness facilities and programs ensuring a safe, operational, and aesthetically pleasing environment. Work includes, but is not limited to: the repair, maintenance, and cleaning of all weight/fitness equipment, complete maintenance of all outdoor facilities, special event support, and special project assignments. Experience using hand tools and outdoor maintenance equipment helpful, but training is provided.

Personal Trainer

Develop individualized exercise programs and work one-on-one with people during their training sessions. Motivate and educate participants on proper training techniques and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Adult CPR certification required. Experience working as weight/fitness staff or personal trainer certification preferred.

Pool Operator

Provide a safe and pleasant atmosphere for swimmers, monitor and regulate water chemistry, and operate the pool mechanical systems. CPO license is required.

RecWell Bike Shop Mechanic

Help members of the UMD community with bicycle repairs in a collaborative and educational environment. Assist with various bicycle events and initiatives sponsored through RecWell Adventure Program.

Tennis Instructor

Teach basic strokes, rules, and scoring. Teaching experience preferred.

Weight/Fitness Staff

Demonstrate and teach proper technique on all weight/fitness equipment, enforce facility rules, clean equipment, and answer basic questions about strength and cardiovascular training programs.

Yoga Instructor

Teach basic Yoga poses and breathing techniques. Experience and knowledge in yoga is necessary. Teaching experience preferred. Current CPR certification is preferred.
