Personal Training

University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) offers individual packages (1 client - 1 trainer) as well as team packages (2 clients - 1 trainer) to inspire and motivate you to achieve your fitness goals. 

In addition to this, RecWell offers PT+ (1 client - 1 trainer - 1 nutrition coach) packages which take a holistic approach to fitness by providing personal training and nutrition coaching services.

Who can purchase personal training services?
Personal training services are open to RecWell members and students. Limited Access Members have the option to purchase individual personal training packages and may train only in SPH 0101 and SPH 0103 facilities.

What can you expect from your personal trainer?
You’ll work with a certified student trainer to set goals, overcome lifestyle barriers, design a workout, learn more about fitness and build an effective workout tailored to you. Training sessions offer a combination of education, guidance, and motivation. Most of all, training sessions are a moderate to high intensity workout. You should expect to work up a sweat and get a full body workout within the framework of a training session. You’ll leave feeling confident, strong, and ready to continue on your path to fitness well beyond the time you spend with a trainer.

What can you expect from your nutrition coach?
All nutrition coaches are senior Dietetics students from the University Health Center, supervised by the campus Registered Dietician. Nutrition Coaches work with you to assess your eating patterns, set realistic goals, and help you develop a pattern of eating that will support your fitness goals today and for the future. The Nutrition Coach will provide ongoing support and help you continue to establish nutritional skills needed to achieve a lifelong healthy way of eating.

How can I sign up for personal training services?

Visit the Eppley Recreation Services Member Services Desk or download the registration forms online and email to rowhb@umd.edu. 

How can I get a refund after I've purchase personal training services?

Refunds are permitted on a case-by-case basis and will not be granted because your trainer graduates or leaves the University. All personal training packages expire after 5-months of the purchase date. To inquire about a refund please contact rowhb@umd.edu, note a $10 processing fee will be charged for all issued refunds.

What are the benefits of training with a partner?

In addition to individual 1-1 packages, we also offer the opportunity to train with a partner. Training with a partner creates a social support system that can help you stay on track and increase your odds of sticking with your program. Exercising with a partner offers accountability, encouragement, and the fun and energy of training alongside a friend.

  • LAM=SPH Limited Access Members have the option to purchase 1-on-1 personal training sessions. Training is only available in SPH 0101 and SPH 0103. LAM members register for sessions at the ERC Member Services Desk.

PT+ Personal Training Packages


Due to limitations in staffing, Nutrition Coaching services are available during the Fall and Spring semesters only.  If you would like nutrition support between semesters, consider making an appointment with the campus dietitian-nutritionist.

What is the PT+ program?
Exercise is just one part of the physical wellness equation. PT+ is a team approach to fitness including a Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach and You! Your personal trainer and nutrition coach will work with you to set goals and develop a comprehensive, long-term plan for nutrition and exercise. This package is ideal for those looking to make a lasting lifestyle change and improve overall wellness.

What will I get from PT+ nutrition coaching services? 

The Nutrition Coaching program is designed to provide you with evidence based nutrition information, teach you the skills needed to develop a healthy way of eating and provide you the support needed to solidify this way of eating for a lifetime.

The focus of nutrition coaching is on behavior change rather than a strict diet. The Nutrition Coach helps you develop dietary habits that fit into your lifestyle and will support your nutrition goals today as well as sustaining them in the future. We believe that all foods can fit into a healthy diet and will teach you how to incorporate your favorite foods while meeting your dietary goals.  

Note: PT+ packages are only available for purchase from the start of the fall semester through April 1. 

What are the benefits of PT+?
In addition to personal training sessions, you will receive 1-on-1 nutrition coaching sessions as well as weekly email/ phone connection with your nutrition coach. Your nutrition coach will take an inclusive approach to food and will equip you with strategies for making and maintain long-term proper nutrition.

  • In addition to working with a Personal Trainer for ten 1-on-1 sessions, you will receive five 1-hour Nutrition Coaching sessions and weekly email/phone connection with your coach for 10-weeks or the entire length of the package, whichever comes first.

PT+ Team Training Packages
Nutrition coaching is very personalized to the individual and not conducive to a team approach. One or both members of a team can add-on nutrition coaching services for the rate of $30 student or $37.50 member to any 10 or 12 session Team Personal Training package.
