Natatorium Closure - Summer 2017
University Recreation & Wellness will be replacing the PoolPak® units in the ERC Natatorium this summer. As this is a significant undertaking, the Natatorium will be closed for the duration of the project. We will use this webpage to provide updates as they become available.
When will the Natatorium be closed?
The Natatorium will be closed from May 12 through the completion of the project. The project is currently estimated to be finished by August 25.
What spaces are affected?
The following spaces within the Natatorium will be closed:
- 50 meter pool
- Instructional pool
- Family locker room
- Pool deck
Additionally, the walkway behind the ERC (between the ERC and the challenge course/climbing wall area) will be closed from May 1 through the completion of the project to accommodate large scaffolding and construction equipment needed for the project. The equipment will also take up some spaces in the SS1 parking lot.
Will I still be able to access the locker rooms?
Yes, the men’s, women’s, and gender inclusive locker rooms within the ERC will all remain open and available for use (as mentioned above, the family locker room will be unavailable). Additionally, there are men’s and women’s locker rooms, as well as a family changing area, available at the outdoor pool. (There are no showers or toilets inside the family changing area at the outdoor pool.)
Where can I swim?
The Outdoor Aquatic Center (just outside the ERC) will have extended hours throughout the duration of the project. Hours of operation for the OAC will be as follows:
April 29 - May 11
Monday - Sunday, 12 PM - 7 PM
May 12 - May 28
Monday - Friday, 6 AM - 9:30 PM
Saturday, 8 AM - 7:30 PM
Sunday, 10 AM - 7:30 PM
May 30 - August 22
Monday - Friday, 6 AM - 9:30 PM
Saturday, 8 AM - 8:30 PM
Sunday, 10 AM - 8:30 PM
May 29, 10 AM - 7:30 PM
July 4, 8 AM - 5:30 PM
Please note: Many of the special groups and programs that typically use the indoor pool(s) during the summer will be moved to the outdoor pool this year. Therefore, the outdoor pool will be quite busy during the day, but there will always be at least 1 lane available for open recreation/lap swimming. The diving board at the OAC will only be available for use on Saturday afternoons and on Sundays.
What are the inclement weather policies for the OAC?
During the Natatorium closure, there will be no OAC closures due to forecasted temperatures.
Pools will close for 30 minutes and reopen 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Pools will be cleared and patrons can remain on deck.
Pools will close for 30 minutes and reopen 30 minutes after last bolt of lightning. All staff and patrons should exit the deck and seek shelter in the OAC locker rooms or the ERC. DO NOT USE THE SHOWERS!
Pools will remain open as long as main drains are visible from lifeguard stand.
After hearing the tornado sirens, quickly evacuate to the ERC basement (by Equipment Issue). Patrons are strongly encouraged to go inside the ERC but are not required and may leave on their own recognizance.
What are PoolPak® units?
PoolPak® units provide the dehumidification and cooling system for the Natatorium. The current units have outlived the typical lifespan and as such, need to be replaced with a more efficient and up-to-date system.
