Adventure Programs for Veterans

The University Recreation & Wellness Adventure Program is proud to partner with Veteran Student Life and Team River Runner in order to create adventure experiences for veterans.


Family Paddle on the Potomac
Date: Sunday, April 2
Location: Columbia Island Marina, VA
Cost:  This program is free for veteran students and their families
* Transportation from campus, paddle instructors, canoes, paddles, PFD's, and lunch are provided

Bring your family and spend a day on the water!  We will be paddling from Columbia Island Marina to Theodore Roosevelt Island where we’ll break for lunch before returning to Columbia Island Marina.  Throughout our paddle you'll be able to enjoy views of the monuments and the cherry blossoms blooming.  
Alpine Tower
Date: Thursday, April 20
Time: 2-4 PM

Veteran students will have the opportunity to experience climbing the UMD Challenge Course Alpine Tower.  Challenge Course staff from the RecWell Adventure Program will facilitate a climbing program on this 55 foot high structure.  The program will cater to various skill levels and emphasize the importance of  supporting the efforts and challenges of others as they tackle new obstacles and expand their personal comfort zone through climbing.

Climb with HSC Pediatric Center
Date: Saturday, April 22
Time: TBD

Veterans will have the opportunity to give back to the local community by providing adaptive recreation opportunities to youth from HSC Pediatric Center.  Youth will be able to try their hand at adaptive climbing on the UMD wall while being supported by veterans.

Mountain Biking
Date: Saturday, May 6
Pre-Trip Meeting:  Tuesday, May 2 at 8 PM
Location:  Rosaryville State Park, MD
Cost:  Free for veteran students thanks to generous support from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs
*Mountain bike instructors and bike mechanics, bike and helmet, transportation, and lunch included

Push yourself and learn new skills with on this mountain biking trip for veterans!  We will head out to Rosaryville State Park in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, home to some of the best single-track mountain biking in the region. Trip leaders will provide you with enough instruction to get you rolling. Once you're feeling confident on the bike, you'll get to experience all that Rosaryville State Park has to offer, from the challenge of hill climbs to the excitement of hopping roots, rocks, and logs. No previous mountain biking experience necessary.   

 

Paddle in the Pool

National Kayak Football Tournament at Walter Reed:  March 4
