MAP Trips

Trips hosted by the Adventure Program are a great opportunity to get out of College Park. All UM students, faculty and staff are eligible for our trips and can bring up to one guest. Pre-trip meetings are mandatory and will cover important safety and logistical information. All gear, instruction and transportation is included in cost of trip. Meals are not provided, except for the spring break trips. Unless otherwise stated, all trips are designed for beginners and people in moderate physical condition. The Adventure Program staff will make every effort to accommodate people with special needs.

Spring 2017 Adventure Trips

Cross Country Skiing New Germany State Park
Date:  Saturday, February 4
Location:  Grantsville, MD 
Pre-Trip Meeting:  Tuesday, January 31 @ 8 PM 
Cost:  $50 (includes ski rental)

Enjoy the day cross country skiing through the snowy hills of Western Maryland in New Germany State Park.  You’ll learn the basics of cross country skiing on some of the best groomed tracks around while also getting a workout and enjoying the wooded scenery.

Winter Backpacking the Pinnacle
Date:  Saturday, February 11-Sunday, February 12
Location:  Hamburg, PA

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean the adventures have to stop!  Join the Adventure Program on a winter backpacking adventure.  We’ll be backpacking Pinnacle and Pulpit Rock in beautiful Eastern Pennsylvania.  Get ready for the best view in Pennsylvania as we spend some time on the snow covered trails.  You’ll be rewarded after our winter adventure with a visit to the fabled Chocolate World on the return trip!

Caving Whitings Neck
Date:  Saturday, February 18 
Location:  Sheperdstown, WV

We’re heading underground to escape the cold! Come explore the unique features and formations that Whitings Neck Cave has to offer.  You’ll slither through the “Birth Canal” and get turned around in the “Milkshake Room.”  No previous caving experience is necessary, just an adventuresome spirit and a willingness to get muddy!

Hike & Serve Patapsco Valley State Park 
Date: Sunday, February 26 
Location: Ellicott City, MD

Spend your Sunday volunteering and hiking in one of our local state parks! We'll spend a couple of hours assisting with a clean up along the banks for the Patapsco River and the rest of the time hiking in the park. This trip is the perfect combo of giving back to and enjoying the natural world.

Cave & Cabin West Virginia
Date: Saturday, March 4-Sunday, March 5
Location:  Seneca Rocks, WV

Join us for this wild and wonderful adventure to West Virginia! We’ll spend most of the weekend underground exploring the area’s many caves and our evening in a cabin in the shadow of Seneca Rocks.

Hike Shenandoah

Leave the hustle of campus for a day of peaceful hiking in the famous, beautiful hills of Shenandoah National Park.  This is a perfect time to breathe in the fresh air while experiencing the end of winter in Shenandoah.

Spring Break: Backpacking the Appalachian Trail

Location:  Appalachian Trail, TN & NC

Be a part of the Adventure Program’s history and join us as we embark on our next section hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT) through Tennessee and North Carolina.  This year’s trip will include summiting Max Patch Mountain, an open bald that offers a 360 degree view of the surrounding area.  Over the next several years, the Adventure Program will be section hiking the AT in its entirety with the ultimate goal of reaching the Northern Terminus- Mt. Katahdin in Maine.  Five years ago the Adventure Program began at the Southern Terminus, Mt. Springer in Georgia, and began the voyage north.  Be a part of this year’s hiking team and help us get closer to our goal.  No previous backpacking experience is necessary, but you should be in good physical condition.

Spring Break: Kayak Cape Lookout National Seashore
Date:  Sunday, March 19-Saturday, March 25
Location:  Harkers Island, NC

Spend your spring break exploring the beautiful, remote beaches of Cape Lookout National Seashore.  You’ll spend your days kayaking and exploring the seashore and your evenings falling asleep on the beach to the sound of the waves crashing into the shore.  No previous kayaking experience is necessary.

Hike & Serve Calvert Cliffs State Park

Spend your Saturday along the cliffs of the Chesapeake Bay at Calvert Cliffs State Park.  We will spend our morning volunteering with general trail and park maintenance and spend our afternoon exploring the parks trails that are known for their fossils and beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay.

Cherry Blossom Kayak on the Potomac
Date: Saturday, April 1
Location:  Washington, D.C.

Paddle along the Potomac River and see the DC monuments like you never have before – from the seat of a kayak!  On this adventure you’ll explore Teddy Roosevelt Island, enjoy the cherry blossoms, and experience kites flying near the Washington Monument as part of the Blossom Kite Festival.  No kayaking experience is necessary.

Introduction to Mountain Biking

This trip is designed to give participants the required knowledge and skills to safely and successfully enjoy the sport of mountain biking. Rosaryville State Park is a great place to learn while enjoying the twisty trails. Bicycle and helmet provided.

Old Rag Sunrise Hike
Date: Saturday, April 8-Sunday, April 9
Location: Shenandoah National Park, VA

Don’t miss out on this Adventure Program classic!  You will scale Old Rag Mountain in the dark hours of the early morning while the rest of the world is still asleep.  After some hard hiking and rock scrambling under a starry sky, you’ll be rewarded with a memorable sunrise on the summit of Old Rag and one of the East Coast’s most incredible panoramic views.

Bike & Boulder at Governor Dick – NEW Trip!

Join the Adventure Program on a brand new adventure designed for adventure seekers.  We’ll spend the weekend bouldering on the large boulders strewn throughout the forest and riding our bikes on the rocky, rolling trails.  If you are looking to challenge yourself, this trip is for you!  Bike and helmet rental included.

Rock Climbing Sugarloaf

Join the Adventure Program on the cliffs of one of Maryland’s best kept secrets-Sugarloaf Mountain!  Feel your arms pumping as you reach the top or your climb and breathe in the refreshing spring air while taking in the beautiful sights.  The Adventure Program Trip Leaders will accommodate your skill level whether this is your first time climbing or you are a regular at our climbing wall.

Anacostia Tributary Trail Ride to Washington DC’s Navy Yard – NEW Trip!
Date: Saturday, April 15th
Location: Washington, DC
Pre-Trip Meeting: Tuesday, April 11 @ 8 PM

Get outside and explore some of the great sights to be seen right in your backyard! This 15-mile bike ride will take you from campus all the way down to Washington DC’s historic Navy Yard neighborhood. Along the way the group will see many local attractions, including Lake Artemisia, the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, and Nationals Park. Once in Navy Yard, the group will have some time to explore Yards Park before driving back to campus in UMD vehicles. The bike ride is mostly flat, mostly on paved bike trails, and is appropriate for beginner riders. Bike and helmet are provided.

Canoeing on the Monocacy River

Join the Adventure Program for a canoeing adventure on the Monocacy River, one of Maryland’s Wild and Scenic Rivers.  Spend a leisurely spring day trying your hand at canoeing and enjoying the beautiful scenery of Western Maryland.

Earth Day Bike & Serve Ride to EcoCity Farm
Date: Saturday, April 22

Join the RecWell Adventure Program for a morning of bike riding and community service to celebrate Earth Day. We will meet at on campus Saturday morning and bike approximately five miles along the Northeast Branch Trail to EcoCity Farm in Edmonston. Once there, we will work with EcoCity's staff to do tasks to benefit the farm, including weeding, harvesting, and turning beds, among others. Around 1:00 PM we will break for snacks and conversation before biking back to campus. Bikes and helmets will be provided for the ride. Ride size limited to 12 participants.

Climb & Camp Annapolis Rocks

Welcome the spring weather with a weekend of adventure at Annapolis Rocks.  We will backpack a short distance on the Appalachian Trail to our climbing site, set up camp for the weekend, and spend two days rock climbing and hiking.  Enjoy a weekend away from campus and the spectacular views from the heights of Annapolis Rocks!

Canoe & Camp the Shenandoah River

Spend the weekend canoeing a section of the beautiful South Fork of the Shenandoah River while enjoying the scenery and paddling through rapids and ripples.  After a day of paddling, you’ll make camp on the banks of the river in George Washington National Forest where you’ll enjoy the comforts of a campfire and be in awe of the star filled sky.

DC Monuments Sunset Bike Ride

Join the RecWell Adventure Program for an evening ride among some of Washington DC’s most iconic landmarks! Adventure Program Trip Leaders will set an easy pace and provide opportunities to stop at various monuments and memorials along the ride. The trip will cover about ten miles over three hours of riding, mostly on trails and sidewalks on the National Mall. Bicycle and helmet provided.

Intro to Whitewater Kayaking

Pre-Trip Meeting: Tuesday, April 25 @ 8 PM

This trip is designed to teach you the basics of the whitewater kayaking.  You’ll start off learning the basics in the pool at the pre-trip meeting and trained trip leaders will have you running some class II rapids on the Potomac by the end of the trip.  No previous kayaking experience is necessary.

Intro to Stand Up Paddleboarding

Time: 3:30-8:30 PM

Take a break from studying and join us for a relaxing half day on the water!  You’ll be able to try your hand at the fast growing sport of stand up paddleboarding (SUP).  Spa Creek is the perfect place to enjoy some sunshine and time on the water before finals.  There is no pre-trip meeting for this trip.  No SUP experience needed.

ClimbYo: Climbing + Yoga at Great Falls

Join us on the Virginia side of the Potomac River as we scale the rock cliffs above the river.  Adventure Program trip leaders will accommodate your skill level whether this is your first time climbing or you are a regular at our climbing wall.  Spend the day pushing your limits on the rock and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Potomac River rushing by.  Throughout the day, break for Yogafit practice with one of our RecWell Yogafit instructors.  Including modifications for “yogis” new and old, practice will focus on stretching, strengthening, and relaxation.  Don’t miss out on this unique adventure!

Paddle & Camp Point Look Out
Date: Saturday, May 6-Sunday, May 7
Location: Scotland, MD

Spend the weekend relaxing before finals with a weekend of paddling at Point Look Out State Park in St. Mary’s County.  This scenic peninsula was formed by the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River.  Spend your days kayaking on the water and your evening relaxing around a campfire.  No previous kayaking experience is necessary.

Cancellation / Refund Policies: 

If University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) cancels the trip due to weather, lack of participants, or other circumstances, the participant will receive a refund. 

For a one or two day trip if the participant cancels their registration 8 business days (defined as Monday - Friday when classes are in session) or more prior to the first day of the trip, a refund will be given, less $10.00 processing fee. Cancellations made within 7 business days prior to the first day of the trip will result in no refund.  If you or the Adventure Program are able to find another individual to take your place on the trip, a refund will be given less a $10.00 processing fee. 

For extended trips of 3 days length or longer, if the participant cancels their registration 13 business days or more prior to the first day of the trip a refund will be given, less a $10.00 processing fee. Cancellations made within 12 business days prior to the first day of the trip will result in no refund.

The time stamp generated from the completion of this form will act as the official time of your cancellation / refund request. All cancellation / refund requests must be made through this form.
