MAP Trips

Trips hosted by the Adventure Program are a great opportunity to get out of College Park. All UM students, faculty and staff are eligible for our trips and can bring up to one guest. Pre-trip meetings are mandatory and will cover important safety and logistical information. All gear, instruction and transportation is included in cost of trip. Meals are not provided, except for the spring break trips. Unless otherwise stated, all trips are designed for beginners and people in moderate physical condition. The Adventure Program staff will make every effort to accommodate people with special needs.

Summer 2017 Adventure Trips

Backpacking the Appalachian Trail
Date: Sunday, May 21–Thursday, May 25
Location: Appalachian Trail, PA
Pre-Trip Meetings: Thursday, May 11, 8–10 PM
Cost: $225 (backcountry meals included)

Celebrate the end of the semester by escaping College Park and hitting the trail! Join the Adventure Program as we embark on our next section hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT) through Pennsylvania. The Adventure Program set a goal to section hike the AT in its entirety with the ultimate goal of reaching the Northern Terminus—Mt. Katahdin in Maine. Five years ago the Adventure Program began at the Southern Terminus, Mt. Springer in Georgia, and has since continued our voyage north. Join us as we continue our adventure in Pennsylvania. No previous backpacking experience is necessary, but you should be in good physical condition.

Amenities: Outdoor toilet facilities (privies) available

Kayak the Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay
Date: Sunday, June 4
Location: Nanjemoy, MD
Pre-Trip Meeting: Wednesday, May 31 @ 7 PM
Cost: $25

Spend a summer day exploring the Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay! You’ll paddle the beneath the cliffs along the Potomac River and explore the ancient relics of the largest shipwreck fleet in the Western Hemisphere.

Travel Time: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes one way


Climb & Camp along the Potomac River
Date: Saturday, June 17–Sunday, June 18
Location: Carderock, MD & Great Falls, VA
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, June 15 @ 7 PM
Cost: $50

Join the Adventure Program for a climbing adventure along the Potomac River! The trip leaders will accommodate your skill level whether this is your first time climbing or you are a regular at our climbing wall. You’ll spend the first day climbing at Carderock on the Maryland side of the river and the second day climbing at Great Falls on the Virginia side of the river. On Saturday evening, you’ll enjoy a campfire and tent camping at Marsden Tract along the historic C & O Canal Towpath.

Intro to Mountain Biking
Date: Saturday, June 24
Location: Upper Marlboro, MD
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, June 22 @ 7 PM

Have you always wanted to try your hand at mountain biking but don’t know where or how to start? If so, this trip is for you! Our Intro to mountain biking trip is designed to give first-time mountain bikers the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently ride beginner level mountain bike trails. We will start the day with a lesson on mountain biking basics before heading out on the beginner’s loop at Rosaryville State Park. Over the course of this 8-mile ride you will have the opportunity to put your newly learned skills into practice! Bike and helmet rental are included in the price of the trip.

Stand Up Paddleboard Gunpowder Falls State Park
Date: Saturday, July 1
Location: Chase, MD
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, June 29 @ 7 PM

Join us for a relaxing day on the water at Gunpowder Falls State Park. Enjoy the summer sunshine as we explore Dundee Creek by stand up paddle board.

Bike & Camp the C & O Canal—NEW trip!
Date: Saturday, July 1–Tuesday, July 4
Location: Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, MD
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, June 29 @ 7 PM
Cost: $175 (Backcountry meals included)

Join us as we explore Maryland by bike! We will pack up our bikes and BOB trailers for a scenic ride along the C & O Canal. The C & O Canal Towpath is a flat, gravel bike path that follows the Potomac River for 184 miles. Traveling self-supported, we will ride from Georgetown to Cumberland in four days (riding approximately 45 miles each day) in order to bike the trail in its entirety. Participants should have some riding experience and be comfortable with riding for approximately six hours each day with breaks throughout. Bike rentals, BOB trailer rentals, and backcountry meals are included in the cost of the trip.

Canoe & Camp the Shenandoah River
Date: Saturday, July 8–Sunday, July 9
Location: Bentonville, VA
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, July 6 @ 7 PM
Cost: $55

Spend the weekend canoeing a section of the beautiful South Fork of the Shenandoah River while enjoying the scenery and splashing through rapids and ripples. After a day of paddling, you’ll make camp on the banks of the river in George Washington National Forest where you’ll enjoy the comforts of a campfire and be in awe of the star filled sky.

Intro to Whitewater Kayaking
Date: Saturday, July 22
Location: Potomac, MD
Pre-Trip Meeting: Wednesday, July 19 @ 7 PM
Cost: $20

Join the Adventure Program for an adventurous day on the water! This is an introductory trip so no previous whitewater experience is necessary. You’ll start off learning the basics in the pool at the pre-trip meeting and trained trip leaders will have you running some class II rapids on the Potomac by the end of the trip. Expect to get your adrenaline pumping, learn paddling skills, and meet some new people!

Drive Time: Approximately 45 minutes one way


Caving Whitings Neck
Date: Sunday, July 30
Location: Sheperdstown, WV
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, July 27 @ 7 PM
Cost: $30

Escape the summer heat and head underground to experience Mother Nature’s natural cooling system! You’ll explore the unique features and formations that Whitings Neck Cave has to offer. Slither through the “Birth Canal” and get turned around in the “Milkshake Room.” No previous caving experience is necessary, just an adventuresome spirit and a willingness to get muddy!

Climbing Sugarloaf
Date: Saturday, August 5
Location: Dickerson, MD

Join the Adventure Program on the cliffs of one of Maryland’s best kept secrets-Sugarloaf Mountain! Feel your arms pumping as you reach the top or your climb and breathe in the refreshing spring air while taking in the beautiful sights. The Adventure Program trip leaders will accommodate your skill level whether this is your first time climbing or you are a regular at our climbing wall.

Old Rag Sunrise Hike
Date: Saturday, August 12–Sunday, August 13
Location: Shenandoah National Park, VA
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, August 10 @ 7 PM
Cost: $60

Don’t miss out on this Adventure Program classic! You will scale Old Rag Mountain in the dark hours of the early morning while the rest of the world is still asleep. After some hiking and rock scrambling under a starry sky, you’ll be rewarded with a memorable sunrise on the summit of Old Rag and one of the East Coast’s most incredible panoramic views.

Travel Time: Approximately 2 hours, 15 minutes away


Cancellation / Refund Policies

If University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) cancels the trip due to weather, lack of participants, or other circumstances, the participant will receive a refund.

For a one or two day trip if the participant cancels their registration 8 business days (defined as Monday–Friday when classes are in session) or more prior to the first day of the trip, a refund will be given, less $10.00 processing fee. Cancellations made within 7 business days prior to the first day of the trip will result in no refund. If you or the Adventure Program are able to find another individual to take your place on the trip, a refund will be given less a $10.00 processing fee.

For extended trips of 3 days length or longer, if the participant cancels their registration 13 business days or more prior to the first day of the trip a refund will be given, less a $10.00 processing fee. Cancellations made within 12 business days prior to the first day of the trip will result in no refund.

The time stamp generated from the completion of this form will act as the official time of your cancellation / refund request. All cancellation / refund requests must be made through this form.
