Orientation Adventure Trips

Orientation Program

Extend your Honors College Summer Orientation with an optional four-day, three-night Honors T.E.N.T.S. kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, or multi-sport adventure in 2017!  The Terrapin Expeditions for New and Transfer Students (T.E.N.T.S.) program assists students as they transition into the college experience.  All of these adventures are designed exclusively for new students in the Honors College and each adventure is a great way for students to build relationships with one another.  


Multi-Sport Adventure
Dates: Thursday, June 8-Sunday, June 11
Time: The program will begin at 2:30 PM (following orientation) on the first day and finish at 4 PM on the final day   
Location:  Potomac, MD 
Cost: $150 (Includes transportation, equipment rental and meals)

Get ready for an action packed four days of adventure surrounding the DC Beltway!  This trip is a sampler of a variety of adventure activities and will allow you to experience the thrill of mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, and rock climbing.  When you are not adventuring with new friends, you’ll spend your evenings camped camp along the C & O Canal Towpath.

Backpack the Appalachian Trail
Dates:
Thursday, June 8-Sunday, June 11
Thursday, July 13-Sunday, July 16
Time: The program will begin at 2:30 PM (following orientation) on the first day and finish at 4 PM on the final day   
Location:  Appalachian Trail, MD 
Cost: $150 (Includes transportation, equipment rental and meals)

The famous Appalachian Trail stretches approximately 2,180 miles along the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine and passes through 14 states, including Maryland.  You’ll backpack a portion of the Maryland section of the Appalachian Trail while enjoying beautiful scenery, trying your hand at backcountry cooking, and making new friends.   

Canoeing the Shenandoah River 
Dates:
Thursday, June 8-Sunday, June 11
Thursday, July 13-Sunday, July 16
Time: The program will begin at 2:30 PM (following orientation) on the first day and finish at 4 PM on the final day   
Location: Front Royal, VA 
Cost: $150 (Includes transportation, equipment rental and meals)

You’ll spend three days paddling a section of the beautiful South Fork of the Shenandoah River while enjoying the scenery, splashing through rapids and ripples, and making new friends.  After a day of paddling, you’ll make camp on the banks of the river in George Washington National Forest where you’ll enjoy the comforts of a campfire.

Kayak the Potomac River & Wye Island
Dates: Thursday, July 13-Sunday, July 16
Time: The program will begin at 2:30 PM (following orientation) on the first day and finish at 4 PM on the final day   
Location:  Wye Mills, MD 
Cost: $150 (Includes transportation, equipment rental and meals)

You’ll spend one day kayaking on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. where you’ll get a unique view of the monuments from the water.  You’ll spend the next two days circumnavigating Wye Island in the Chesapeake Bay while enjoying beautiful scenery, viewing wildlife, and making new friends.  Once night falls you’ll be in awe of the star filled sky.  

Are you interested in registering for T.E.N.T.S.? Follow these steps:

  • Add Your Track to the Cart:  Once you’ve decided on your trip date and activity, select the “Add to Cart” button.  You will then be directed to provide us with some additional information.  After answering the questions, click the “Continue” button.  Select the “Checkout” button and it will direct you a log-in page for the online registration system.
  • Create an Account:  You will be prompted to log-in to the University Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) online program registration system.  Since you are brand new to the university, you will need to create an account.  Select the “Create an Account” button on the right side of the page.  Enter your name, e-mail address, and zip code.  Select the “Next” button.  On the next page you will see a box titled “Online Account (No Fee).”  Select the “Join Now” button in the box to create your free online account. 
  • Enter Online Account Information:  After you join, you will be prompted to enter additional information about yourself.  Please note that as a UMD student, you are the head of the account.  Because RecWell offers programs for youth, there is an option for multiple members to be linked to one name so that a family can manage one account.   You will then create a username and password.  Please note this username and password is unique from any other UMD password you may have.  Finally, accept the online agreement and select the “Next” button.
  • Account Summary:  You will be directed to a page that says account summary and shows a total of $0.00.  Select the “Process” button to complete your online account creation.
  • Proceed to Cart & Payment:  Select the “Proceed to Cart” button where you’ll be directed to your cart.  Your T.E.N.T.S. registration will be in your cart.  Enter your payment information, select the “Submit Payment Button” and you are all set!

    Additional Lodging:
    If your on-campus orientation begins the Monday after T.E.N.T.S. you can spend Sunday evening on campus and stay at the Adventure Program in the Eppley Recreation Center with Adventure Program staff for no additional cost.  
    Weather Cancellations/Refunds:
    When making your travel plans, please know that there is the possibility that a T.E.N.T.S. program may be cancelled.  If the weather appears questionable for a program, the Adventure Program staff will be in contact with you via e-mail to keep you updated and will do their best to alter the itinerary in order to run the program regardless of weather.  However, if the Adventure Program cancels the trip due to weather, lack of participants, or other circumstances, all participants will receive a full refund and will be notified by email immediately. For extended trips of 3 days length or longer, if the participant cancels their registration 13 business days or more prior to the first day of the trip a refund will be given, less a $10.00 processing fee.  Cancellations made within 12 business days prior to the first day of the trip will result in no refund.  For cancellations and refunds, please complete the online Adventure Program Trip Cancellation and Refund Request Form.

If a participant cancels their registration by contacting the Adventure Program staff earlier than 14 days prior to the program begin date, a full refund will be given.  If the participant cancels their registration within 14 days of the program begin date, no refund will be given.

FAQs

Q:  Is there a place I can park my car during the program?

A:  Yes, please notify your trip leaders in advance that you need to park on campus during the program.  On the day of the program come to the Adventure Program, unload your gear, and a trip leader will run shuttle for students needing to park on campus to the Paint Branch Visitors Lot.  It is $15/day Monday-Friday and free on Saturday-Sunday.

Q: Is there a secure place to store personal belongings from orientation while on the adventure trip?
A:  Yes, there is a locked area where personal belongings can be stored while students are on the trip.
