Equipment Rental


Check out the Adventure Program's comfy resource center, filled with couches, a library of books, magazines, maps, web sites, not to mention it's a wireless hotspot. Come on down and relax. Let the Adventure Program staff help you plan your own trip with friends or family.

Adventure Program rental equipment and programs are available to University of Maryland students, faculty and staff, as well as those individuals who are eligible to purchase University Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) memberships (must be at least 18 years old). Outdoor equipment can be rented on a daily, weekend, or weekly basis. For more information on rentals call (301) 226-HIKE.

Cash, checks, or credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX) are accepted. Advance reservations are recommended.

Late Fee Policy: Charged each day gear is late the standard daily rental rate (after 10 days – replacement fee).

Refund Policy: NO refunds for ON-SITE rentals once transaction has been processed.
Refunds for reserved gear must be requested 48 hours prior to rental date.
Cleaning Fee Policy: A $10 fee will be charged for gear that is returned with excessive dirt, sand, or other forms of uncleanliness (as determined by Adventure Program Professional Staff)
Damage / Replacement Fee Policy: Retail price + 10% for any lost or damaged gear beyond repair as determined by Adventure Program Professional Staff 

Clinics, Rentals, & Rides

Map clinic

Kayak Roll Clinic
Location: ERC Natatorium
Dates: Wednesday Nights from 8:00 – 10:00 PM

Session One: February 15th and 22nd
Session Two: March 29th and April 5th

This clinic will teach you everything you need to know to get started kayaking. We will start with a general introduction to the sport and will go over the basic strokes. We will then focus on kayak wet exits and learning how to roll a kayak. Two meetings per session. No experience necessary. Bring your swimsuits and a towel. Class size is limited to four participants and commitment to attend both sessions is required. There is a $10 program fee for this clinic.

Intro to Bicycle Maintenance Class

Location: RecWell Bike Shop (Cole 0249)
Dates: Tuesday nights from 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Session One: February 7th - 28th
Session Two: April 4th  - 25th

This four-session class provides an introduction to the basics of bicycle maintenance and repair. The class meets on Tuesday nights from 6-8 PM in the RecWell Bike Shop. Topics covered include flat tire repair, brake adjustment, brake pad replacement, drive-train maintenance and repair, and an introduction to hubs, bottom brackets, and headsets. The class is being offered at a discounted cost of $15. Upon successful completion of the class participants will receive a bike multi-tool and a set of tire levers. Class size limited to eight participants.

Intro to Backpacking Clinic
Location: Adventure Program Classroom
Dates: Monday Nights from 8:00 – 10:00 PM
Session One: April 3 - 17

This three-part clinic is designed to give participants the required knowledge and skills to safely and successfully plan their own backpacking adventure. This clinic meets on Monday nights from 8:00 – 10:00 PM in the Adventure Program Classroom in the Eppley Recreation Center. Topics covered over the three weeks of the course include: gear selection and sizing, route planning, safety precautions and considerations, and Leave no Trace principles. Class size is limited to ten participants and commitment to attend all three sessions is required. There is a $15 program fee for this clinic. Upon successful completion of the class participants will receive a custom printed Adventure Program Nalgene.

Intro to Backcountry Cooking Clinic
Location: Adventure Program Classroom
Dates: Monday Nights from 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Session One: April 24th

This clinic is designed to give participants an introduction to the art of cooking in the backcountry. This clinic will take place on Monday night, 10/3, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Adventure Program Challenge Course Pavilion behind the Eppley Recreation Center. Participants will prepare a variety of classic backcountry meals using both a camping stove and a campfire. Class size is limited to ten participants and commitment to attend all three sessions is required. There is a $10 program fee for this clinic.

Wilderness First Responder

This program is the ideal medical training for leaders in remote areas including outdoor educators, guides, military, professional search and rescue teams, researchers, and those involved in disaster relief. Hosted by Wilderness Medical Associates and the University of Maryland-College Park

Where is the Climbing Wall?

It is located on the north end of the Eppley Recreation Center, near lot SS3 at the end of South Farm Drive. We are just down the stairs from the Outdoor Aquatic Center. The Adventure Center has a separate entrance and is not accessible from the ERC main entrance.
